There are two parts to the challenge that we face when learning
leather tooling. First, a design must be drawn. Secondly, it must be tooled.

In these pages you will find a sculptor’s approach to leather
tooling where the stamps are seen as tools for modeling shapes
in leather — where we see the shapes, not just the stamp impressions.
We want depth and life in the work. We want to make leaves,
flowers, and scrolls, that flow over, under, and around each other.

In its 94 pages, this book focuses on design fundamentals that can help people evaluate and critique their own work more effectively. Part of this that is especially helpful is an in depth look at the skeletal -- underlying structure in each element of every design. While circle layout is explained, it is done with the addition of a new comparison of circles to scrolls. Details of the shapes used to draw acanthus leaves are clearly laid out, and flow is treated differently, as flowing and growing. This is particularly useful for advancing on to more complex intertwining stem-work ideas.
